Choosing the right service
Not sure which page fits your situation? Most electrical work falls into a few broad groups, and knowing which one you’re in helps you describe the job when you call.
Repairs and troubleshooting
Dead outlets, tripping breakers, flickering lights and warm switch plates are repair calls. The goal is to find the cause, not just reset the symptom, so be ready to say when the problem started and what else runs on the same circuit.
Upgrades and additions
Panel replacements, new circuits, lighting, surge protection and GFCI or AFCI protection are upgrades. They usually start with a look at your panel and how much capacity is left, and larger jobs often require a permit and inspection.
Planned projects
Remodels, additions, commercial fit-outs, rental turnovers and standby generators are planned projects. They go more smoothly when the electrical scope is settled early, before walls are closed and other trades are scheduled.
Getting ready for an estimate visit
A little preparation makes an estimate visit faster and more accurate. Clear a path to the electrical panel, make a list of the problems or goals you want to cover, and note any past electrical work you know about. For businesses, have the equipment specifications and your preferred work hours handy.
What happens after the visit
After looking at the job, you should receive an estimate that describes the job, so you can compare options or ask questions before deciding. Once you approve it, you choose a date, and any permit or inspection the job needs becomes part of the timeline.
When the job is finished, it is reasonable to ask for a short explanation of what changed, updated labels in the panel and any advice on what to watch for.
